Kostadis is picking on Rainfinity saying "It doesn't work"
Meanwhile in the reality based community far away from that uninformed looniness...
@cincystorage: i'm really liking EMC Rainfinity FMA. Archiving more than 40% of my nas data to Centera.
It's in some people's interests (Kostadis and the like) to ensure you keep that NAS landfill on their tin. Don't ever look at what's in there, just keep it there. Let it clog up your backups. It's your inaction which grows their business year over year.
They count on the fact that you forget it. That most of it might not even be needed anymore. That you have files on there which haven't been accessed since 1999 but you keep carrying those forward through time.
System after system year after year.
That you don't know what's in those file systems is what feeds their growth machine. Your enlightenment is detrimental to their prospects.
Rainfinity means going forth to manage unstructured data. Celerra, FAS, Centera. No brain damage to your system (keep the value added software you like) or breaking of backups but heterogeneous policy based data migration and the ability to archive before you backup.
Don't throw out the asset, sweat it. Changing the tin or tin supplier? Move the data with no need to interrupt users while you're doing that. Get the utilisation right. Balance it out. Manage data correctly. Don't ignore it.
Rainfinity works and Rainfinity users know it works. They'll tell you it works and that annoys the opposition no end.
The Snake Oil here is the idea that you shouldn't manage your unstructured data and that the only way you can move the landfill is by going homogeneous with the container. But that's not how things work out in the reality based community where data needs to be managed not conveniently ignored.
When you point a flash light into the dark corners of your NAS environment you'll make a lot of unwanted vermin scuttle away. This makes your job as Information Caretaker much much easier.
It works for Rainfinity customers and it'll work for you.
