The Dark Knight IMAX style
It's been a pretty full day today. Up at 5:30AM to catch an early morning plane and I didn't get home until 12:45AM. Throw in the two hours sleep I managed and it's been a long day.
I recommend The Dark Knight as an IMAX experience for those who haven't seen it already and those who are planning on seeing it again. Now it cost me a ton of money to see it in the way I did but if there's an IMAX within driving distance you're denying yourself something special.
Everyone at the screening gasped at the opening shot.
As a production format IMAX is a pain in the ass. The cameras are massive, noisy and can only hold a limited amount of film stock. The smallest and lightest unit a mere 30 seconds, the largest unit a still unimpressive 2 minutes 30 seconds and the things make so much noise it's hard to pickup dialogue over the din.
But god does the footage look epic when you see it.
Watchmen on IMAX also looks epic. I think that's an up sample from 35mm film but none the less I think I know what I might be doing next year. :)
Needless to say now that The Dark Knight has set the stage we'll have every director with delusions of grandeur trying to work in IMAX to their film shoot.
We'll have gone too far when the first all IMAX romcom or dramedy makes it to the screen.
