Poll time: Is the DS8000 dead?

Barry W. over at IBM raises some questions about Tiering In A Box. No comment since I always know more than people expect me to (That's why my head is so big, it's filled with other peoples secrets), but I did like this line.

I also don't want to hear any FUD in response to this about DS8000 being dead, its healthy, was running out the door in the 4th Quarter and continues to be heavily invested in.

Fair enough but it's a sentiment that's out there and found echoing around the industry message boards. (Note Barry W. points out that this thread was started by an EMC dude. Something I didn't know when I posted this.) So with that in mind it's time for everyone to vote. There's a poll on the left hand side of this blog which is totally unscientific and open to massive abuse.

In that way it's just like any election you've ever voted in so hop to it.

Interesting that the message board you link to was started by someone at EMC - not really 'around the industry' Just another example of FUD if you ask me.

Since, 'iheartstorage' commented on RupturedMonkey about all the hard work that was put in - I think I've ruffled his feathers a little judging by his comments back on my topic ;)

PS. Thanks for all the hits on my blog from one.emc.com btw - pitty I can't be a fly on the wall there :)

It was? Fair enough. I remember skimming the thread a while back and it was the only one I could find without any effort.

I ain't running the Wall Street Journal..yet. :)

Yeah I told them you'd notice when that happened. Lets just say we did a post or two today and you're not the only one getting traffic from there. ;)

iheartstorage here. just checking in to say hello. ruffled feathers? hardly! i enjoy the discourse, and the fun and games (or is that FUD and games?). in any case, i hope i have the opportunity to meet you folks at some point. Pints on me.

Hehe - if you are in UK be sure to let me know, already offered Mark a pint next time he's down Winchester direction.

The survey is not asking the right question. The DS8000 is not dead if IBM is still able to ship the product to gullible customers in quantity. However, is the product technically obsolete when compared to its peers from EMC and HDS ? It was technically obsolete several years ago. Every year it just becomes more and more technicallyier obsoleteier :-)

more interesting question is:
what would really happen if ibm *does* decide to "kill" the shark? (the quotes are because really killing the shark is not an option, because ibm has no other solution for the mainframe space. by "killing" i really mean stop pushing it for block-storage)

in a column some time ago, when discussing the xiv acquisition, you completely dismissed the possibility that the xiv machine would go head-to-head with the symmetrix.
now, please complete the thought: do you think that ibm will kill the shark to simply relinquish the market to emc, or rather in favor of pushing the xiv box as their tier-1 solution? (rhetorical question).

now is the time for emc to look seriously into the xiv vs. symmetrix comparison, and be a little more worried about it than the nonchalance you expressed the last time you discussed it.
I hope your dismissive attitude is for show only. If it represents emc's attitude, this spells bad news for anyone who cares about emc.

Any nonchalance you detect is purely my own as are all the other opinions here. For an idea as to what EMC is thinking I'd advise you to contact your local EMC rep.

When it comes to IBM, a competitor with infinite financial reserves and infinite time, I've found EMC to be far from nonchalant about anything it does.

IBM say that the Nextra isn't replacing the DS8000 and I believe them having now studied the system in depth over the past few weeks.

But that doesn't mean Monshaw doesn't have Moshe working on a generation of Nextra which will.
