Storage Blogger evening recap

Anil has a nice write up about his storage blogger event, this part required a response.

I met quite a few ex-bloggers who were quickly discouraged not by their employers or any external entities but from absence of readers resulting in loss of blogging enthusiasm.

Hmmmm. I sometimes think that people expect that when they start a blog all of a sudden they're going to be an A-list blogger. That's true if you have a big megaphone or the right connections but not so much for the rest of us. In the era of the long tail stars are going to be few and far between, you'll have to do more with fewer readers so it's your job to ensure you're attracting quality readership.

It's like the old adage of why writers write, they just don't know how not to. Same thing for blogging, you either feel like you have to get it out and into digital ink (readership be damned), or you don't. If you don't then unless you're being paid to blog you simply won't blog.
